Private Full Day Naxos Sightseeing Tour
Everybody’s heard of Naxos amazing sandy beach coastline, but once you are done exploring kilometers-long white beach paradise, this alternative tour may be your best opportunity to experience an authentic side of Naxos Island and its mountainous landscapes that reveal a lot about its local character and the island’s overwhelming history.
An experienced, native Naxian guide who has spent his entire life on the island, will escort you to experience – a true – away from the tourist line – side of Naxos. You will stop at the Temple of Goddess Demetra at Sangri village to admire an ancient but reconstructed temple from 530 BC, as well as its museum. From there you will visit an old Pottery workshop in Damalas Village, where you can witness the art of pottery making in a traditional setting. Next, you will pass by through the picturesque, colorful, and unique village of Chalki, where it is an absolute must to visit the old distillery which produces the famous Naxian liqueur “Kitron” since 1896.
Later you will stop at the traditional village of Apeiranthos, often referred to as “the marble village”, due to its marble buildings and paved pathways. You can enjoy wandering along its winding paths and stop off for a coffee break at a lovely cafe at 550 m. altitude, to admire the panoramic view of the island’s east and west side.
The next traditional mountain village will be Koronos, with a rich history as it was once a thriving center for marble quarrying and craftmanship, while you can still admire its heritage in the village’s architecture and stone-built buildings. A traditional homemade lunch will be served in a family-owned tavern, which makes its meals almost entirely with homegrown produced fresh ingredients.
You will continue along a narrow-paved trail to discover the Kouros of Melanes at Flerio, an unfinished ancient statue dating to around 550 BC, which stands in a local Naxian family’s garden before visiting the famus marble quarries and an authentic marble factory.
Finally, the tour ends with a visit to an old olive oil factory, where you will learn how the “liquid gold” was once produced at the village of Eggares, and sample its delectable olive oil products, before you return to the city and your hotel.
Note: the temple of Demetra is closed on Tuesdays so this stop will be omitted from the program respectively.
This tour is private for small groups of 1 – 7 persons and is conducted by private car or minivan, with an English-speaking escort. For larger groups up to 15, prices are available on request.
